Who Reel Maker is for
Reel Maker is for people who make short videos to share what they know, and who would rather not spend their evenings on a timeline:
- Creators and experts who film themselves talking to camera.
- Coaches and consultants who use Reels to explain ideas and attract clients.
- Small brands that need regular, polished short videos without an in-house editor.
- SMM managers who produce Reels for several clients and need consistent quality.
- Designers who care how a video looks but do not want to keyframe every caption.
It is less of a fit if you want frame-by-frame control of every cut, or if you need video generated from scratch without filming anything.
How Reel Maker works in 4 steps
First, you install Reel Maker in Claude once. After that, every video follows the same four steps:
- Choose. Pick one of eight looks curated by a designer. Each look's type pair, captions, transitions and timing already work together.
- Drop. Add your raw footage, straight from your phone.
- Direct. Say what you want changed in plain words, for example: "Cut the part where I lose my thought and make the hook shorter."
- Export. Get a vertical 1080x1920 video, ready to post.
Note: "Direct" means you describe the result, the way you would brief a human editor. You do not work on a timeline. The slogan sums it up: "You direct. AI does the editing."
What Reel Maker does to a clip
On a typical talking-head clip, Reel Maker:
- Cuts pauses, stumbles and retakes, so the video flows without dead air.
- Removes background noise, such as café chatter, without distorting your voice.
- Applies a light retouch: smoother skin with a natural look.
- Adds word-timed captions in a designer type pair (a thin weight plus a bold one). Word-timed means each word appears exactly as you say it.
- Adds a title or hook to catch attention at the start.
- Adds motion effects, for example "Orbit" (your reel covers fly around you, behind and in front) and "Covers wall" (your reel covers fill the wall behind you while you stay in front).
- Places sound accents such as whooshes and pops on key moments.
- Exports at 1080x1920.

The 8 looks
A look is a complete set of design decisions made in advance: which fonts are paired, how captions appear, how transitions move and how everything is timed. You pick one and direct from there. Here are four of the eight:

The full set: Editorial, Minimal (black and white), Cinematic, Fashion, Bold Type, Soft Film, UGC and Product. Why a small curated set instead of endless templates? We explain the reasoning in Taste is the new skill.
What Reel Maker is not
- Not a stock video or text-to-video generator. It edits footage you filmed. For the difference between the two approaches, see AI video generators vs AI editors.
- Not a timeline editor. You direct in plain words instead of dragging clips and keyframes.
- Not a subscription. You buy Reel Maker once. The Claude plan it runs on is separate and billed by Anthropic.
- Not publicly launched yet. It is in private beta with a waitlist.
Reel Maker vs editing manually vs template apps
This comparison is general. Individual apps differ, so check any specific tool yourself.
| Editing manually | Template apps | Reel Maker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who does the editing | You, cut by cut | You, inside a preset template | AI, following your direction |
| Design decisions | All yours, from scratch | Set by the template | Set by a designer-curated look, adjustable by direction |
| Skills needed | Timeline editing, audio, typography | Basic app use | Describing what you want in plain words |
| Control | Full, frame by frame | Limited to what the template allows | Within a look, shaped by plain-language direction |
| Uses your own footage | Yes | Usually | Yes |
| Cost model | Varies by software, plus your time | Varies by app | Buy once, plus a separate Claude plan |
| Best for | Editors who want total control | Quick, simple posts | Polished talking-head Reels without timeline work |

Who is behind Reel Maker
Reel Maker was founded by Ala, a senior product designer with 12+ years of experience in startups, mobile apps and AI products. The product is built on a simple belief: "AI can generate anything. Taste decides what should exist." That is why every look is curated by a designer rather than generated on the fly.
